What is an Accredited Specialist?
The Law Society of NSW operates the Specialist Accreditation Scheme to help the general public identify lawyers who have demonstrated proficiency in a particular area of law. Solicitors who fulfill the requirements of the scheme are entitled to use, after their names, the words ‘Accredited Specialist’ in the nominated area of practice. They also receive a certificate and gain exclusive use of a Specialist Accreditation logo which they can display on promotional material.
Before gaining accreditation, under the requirements of the scheme a lawyer must have:
- Practiced full time for at least five years
- Worked in their area of speciality for at least 3 years, and
- Passed rigorous assessments in communication, problem solving, client relations and of course the law.
A lawyer who is an Accredited Specialist must also renew their accreditation each year.
Accredited Specialists make up only 7% of all lawyers and solicitors in NSW. Only 6.7% of all lawyers in NSW have accreditation in Criminal Law and 13.3% have accreditation in Family Law.
Do you need an Accredited Specialist ?
Because Accredited Specialist lawyers are experts in their field they are able to deal with highly complex matters involving property, children’s matters, distribution of assets, superannuation splits, family violence and much more. Anyone with a family law matter would be wise use an Accredited Specialist. The family law rules have changed many times in the past 10 years and there are strict procedures that must be met before a matter can be sent to Court. There are also several ways which separating parents can resolve issues regarding their children prior to going to Court. You need a lawyer who understands all the options and can guide you through the processes and help you with the decision making process. Have a look at our Areas of Practice pages for more detailed information about what we are able to do for you.
